Scott Stapp Suicide Attempt Saved By Rapper T.I.

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Scott Stapp was on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz talking about his book. “Sinners Creed”. I personally didn’t read the book because reading requires your eyes to do that left to right thing and honestly that’s just too much effort. And I always feel bad when I stain the pages with my chubby cheeto fingers. I can wipe off my remote. So I guess i’ll wait for the movie.

Anyway, he talks about the book opens with him going on a huge bender, hearing cops pounding on the door and him trying to climb out the balcony windows. Which of course never works, that only works in the movies. And the “Arms Wide Open” video was not a movie, I dont care how much it cost.

So he falls 40′ fractures his skull, breaks his beak and his hip and lays there in a pool of blood unable to move. When apparently rapper T.I. found him and took care of him basically saving his life. That story almost made me want to read the book. But instead watch the VH1 interview below.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominations Include Rush, Public Enemy and Deep Purple

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

If you’re a musician and shit, maybe if you’re not, the R&R HOF can be very confusing. I actually wish they just wouldn’t call it the “Rock and Roll” HOF. I don’t know who is in it half the time and a lot of the time they’re not even Rock anyway. Some people are very passionate about it. Like Eddie Trunk if you ever listen to his stuff or watch That Metal Show. That dude about spits nails when the hall gets mentioned. I think maybe it should just be the Music HOF. Like important acts are snubbed like, Journey, Kiss, Judas Priest, Chicago, Faith No More.

But this year Deep Purple and Rush are nominated but so are Public Enemy and N.W.A and Randy Newman? W.T.F I mean, not that Public Enemy and N.W.A weren’t huge and deserve recognition. But in the R&R HOF? And don’t get me started on Randy Newman. I mean dude…. Nevermind… Ohh well anyway if you want to read the full article it was in Rolling Stone HERE

**New** Jackson DK2M Pro Series Dinky

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

It’s a Dinky!!! A DK2M Pro Series Dinky to be exact!! And this looks to be a sexy one!! I like Jackson, they make great stuff, take for example this guitar. It’s listed on Jackson’s website at $1133.32 MSRP so we know its going to street under that. But let’s just say it’s $1K. You’re still getting actual Seymour Duncan’s and a Floyd, maple fret board if you want it. Really you wouldn’t have to do much to it if you didn’t want to. But go check it out yourself at Jackson’s website HERE

Rage Against The Machine Bass Player Tom Commerford Maybe On New Rage Album

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

If you’re a TMZ junkie as I have turned into the last few years you would know that sometimes they actually catch up with someone that isn’t a Kardashian or a Lohan. This time they caught up with Tom Commerford the bass player from Rage who gave them a solid “Maybe” on a new album and also his new passion in body mods.

American Idol Is Now Just Honey Boo Boo **SHOCKER**

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

In my **SHOCKER** post of the century, American Idol has now moved on now and appears to be aiming for the Honey Boo Boo demographic. In what seems like a cross between Honey Boo Boo and a Chuck E Cheese cell phone gang fight video, Nicki Minaj is screaming at Mariah Carey in a totally non-stereotypical “Ohh No You Di’nnnnT” rant. Which I think is awesome! Because who better to judge talent other than someone like Nicki, why not have the people that write or auto-tune her music judge?

Best part of the video is watching Keith Urban, I bet he wishes he was a real cowboy right about now. That way he could of hopped on Mariah, rode her around the barrel and goat roped Nicki till the clowns came out to wrangle them back into the cages. Which to me is about the only way this would be successful, if it turned into a good old fashioned rodeo!!! Sometimes they have funnel cakes at rodeos. I like funnel cakes.

Peavey 6534+ Orange 4×12 Demo

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Here is a quick demo of the Peavey 6534+ played through an Orange 4×12. Good morning world of music type people. As I state in the video the 6534 is basically the 6505 but it uses El34’s instead of 6L6’s in the power section. Does it make a difference? I think so!! In many cases I think the difference between EL34’s and 6L6’s is very slight sonically. And more importantly I think that unless you’re cranking your amp to the sun you’re even farther away from telling a difference. But really in my opinion it’s the pre stage that really makes the amp. But in this case switching the power tubes made the head that much better.

I felt that the 6534+ maybe had a bit more bottom available than the 6505+ but it wasn’t huge. I also liked the clean just a bit more. While people always tend to gripe on forums about how crappy the 6505+ clean is, I personally didn’t mind it. And played it in a band that had a lot of clean parts. Again, the differences were very slight. That being said, I am a bit biased as I ran a 6505+ for a long time and is still to this day my favorite daily driver. And one that I regret selling every day!!

Why did I like it you may ask?? Well, a lot of heads that I also like require a lot of tweaking to get a sound that works for my ears. Take your average Mesa head. Everyone loves the recto sound but for me I always felt it was a bit too sloppy, squishy, fizzy sounding. Now the way to rectify that (no pun intended) is to toss an old trusty TS-9 in front of it and that sucks it all up in a nice tight package. Again, that’s just me personally. But I never ran anything tone effecting in front of the 6505+. I had Clean, Crunch and Dirty and it didn’t matter if I was playing metal or just hard rock that head just fit. And fit where in my mind a head should fit IN THE MID-RANGE!! And that’s really what guitar sound is about, sitting in the middle that’s what it’s designed to do.

Also, I think this is fairly low noise for a high gain head. Granted if you crank the gain to 10 it comes apart like any other head. But I probably ran mine between 6 and 7 and didn’t run a gate live. I really just didn’t need it. So in a nutshell, would I recommend this head?? 100%!! Sure you can get more features out of other heads, but really I think this a workhorse that everyone can play on. If you’re the classic rock cover band all the way to the death metal bands, this head will work and I don’t think you will be disappointed either way. But, what is a good head without a killer cab.

This video was shot through an Orange 4×12, which by the way, simply put the bad mamma jamma on the block. And it should be I think it weighs just as much as I do! Well, maybe 1/3 of me. I think they tip the scale at about 110lbs. Which is massive to lug around from gig to gig. But you know that really using the Orange cab you’re pretty much done with that part of your rig. I can honestly say I’ve never heard anyone say, “Man my Orange is ok but I sure wish I had a ….” That just doesn’t happen. As a matter of fact after playing on a couple of Orange cabs I can say that jumping to them would be a simple decision. Unless of course you’re not interested in a cab that sounds killer, is built like a tank and just looks dead sexy.

Below are some Guitar Center links for the 6534+ and Orange cabs. At least go test drive one!!

Phil Anselmo Talks Pantera Reunion With Zakk Wylde

Monday, October 1st, 2012

I’m 38, that’s pretty much old to todays kids trying to rock. And let me talk about todays musicians for a minute. Why the skinny chick emo pants and swoopy hair. How cool are you having a 26″ waist and a 30″ wallet chain and no real chops on your instrument?? I feel like an old man saying that music today is lame but come on, I grew up with Pantera and Ozzy. Music today is dumbed down, wickedly overcompressed, the volume is pushed to stupid dynamic murdering levels (I personally don’t understand that one) blaa blaa blaa.

Anyway, In an article on the Village Voice, Phil Anselmo discusses a Pantera reunion with Zakk Wylde on guitar. Before you get too excited he also mentioned that Vinnie Paul still won’t talk to him. But below is a clip from the Village Voice article that can be found HERE

There have been rumors floating around of a Pantera “reunion” with Zakk Wylde. Is that real, and would that include you?

Well, it would better damn well fuckin’ include me, or it wouldn’t be Pantera. I talked to Zakk about two weeks ago, and he’s very open for it. He’s got an open mind about it. But, truth be told, Vince [Abbott] has got a grudge against me that is really unfounded. And, honestly, I’ve always had a wide-open door when it comes to Vince.

If it takes me standin’ there and lettin’ that little guy punch me in the fuckin’ face repeatedly, over and over and over, til his hands were tired of hittin’ my rock-hard fuckin’ head, as long as we could sit down and talk afterwards, I’m all for it, man.

Would there be any issue with someone else playing Dimebag’s guitar parts?

Well, now, I didn’t say that the Pantera thing is a realistic thing. I don’t think that’s the important thing. I think what the important thing is, what Zakk and I discussed, is just Vince actually dropping his guard and realizing there is no treachery afoot.

Matt Halpern Mapex MyDentity Drums

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Have you heard of Matt Halpern?? If not, leave my website and go to google now!!! Dude is the drummer for the progressive metal band Periphery. I was fortunate enough to work on some stuff with those guys when I was freelancing for the magazine. During that time one of the most apparent things was that Matt was the real deal.

In prog music there are a lot of great drummers. But, IMO many of them tend to be mechanical. I don’t know that I would call that a bad thing but lets just say it’s something that I pick up on. In all reality a lot of prog music is rooted in mechanics be it odd meters or blazing speed, or blazing speed in odd meters!! For some making music that complex and unnatural sound natural is a more difficult than just mechanically learning the tunes.

But when I first saw Matt this dude was touring with the Goodwill drum kit. Busted up cymbals and hardware, drums looked like they had been on tour without cases since the 80’s but you didn’t notice once he played. He’s still pretty much a minimalist with his set up but does 10x’s more than most drummers using 10x’s more. And he does it with buckets of feel. Don’t take that as my saying he’s missing technique because that’s certainly not the case. Just think of it more as a huge blend of technique and feel. It seems when watching him play he’s not really thinking of what he’s going to do next he’s just playing his instrument with a massive amount of understanding.

Anyway enough stroking, Matt is using Mapex drums now, which IMO has always been one of the most underrated drum companies out there. I’ve played their stuff and known lots of people that have and I’ve personally never really heard a bad thing about them.

They have a really sweet line called MyDentity. Basically you can go out to the Mapex website and assemble your own kit, pick shell type between birch or maple, wrap types, hardware colors and hardware set up. And it’s really at a decent price. The coolest thing is in the end you’re getting what appears to be a great kit at a playable price. I’m looking at replacing my recording kit as life may allow me to start recording more drums live than programming. And I just miss playing!! I would love to try out a set of these!! Below is a video of Halpern talking about the MyDentity line.
